Building the capability to manage a growing portfolio

A regional project management office had limited strategic standing and depended entirely on external staffing. Developing its contribution required work across the team, its processes, and its relationships with the business.

Over approximately eighteen months, I combined long-term planning, process design, team building, and stakeholder engagement to reposition the function as a strategic portfolio capability. Existing consultants moved into employee roles, creating lasting internal ownership.

A portfolio-management process based on Kanban and Lean was introduced and subsequently rolled out globally, supported by training across regions. The value of the portfolio under management grew without an increase in management overhead.

This experience informs how I approach transformation: a process becomes useful when people can operate it, stakeholders understand its contribution, and the organization has the capability to sustain it.
