So is the footnote nobody led with.
The Bun JavaScript runtime was rewritten from Zig to Rust last week — almost entirely by Claude AI agents. A 6,755-commit branch, merged in less than a week.
The result: 13,044 `unsafe` blocks in the Rust code. A comparable project of similar scope has 73.
AI compressed the timeline. This is not a story about AI failing.
The rewrite worked: test suite passing, memory leaks resolved, binary size reduced.
It is a story about what "working" means and why that definition needs more precision than most teams are applying right now.
AI can translate a million lines of code in six days. It cannot tell you whether those lines carry organisational memory that no test covers. It does not know what the code 𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛𝑡 , only what it 𝑠𝑎𝑖𝑑.
The Bun team knew this. They built mandatory human approval into every step. That governance structure is why the rewrite succeeded, not the speed.
Where AI-assisted engineering works well, the pattern is consistent: AI as an acceleration layer on top of sound engineering strategy. Not a replacement for it.
The speed is real but the strategy still has to be yours!

Tomorrow: the modernization decisions AI cannot make for you — and why 79% of projects still fail.
